Portulaca grandiflora, commonly known as Moss Rose, delights with ruffled double blooms in soft light pink and white. These succulent-leaved plants are exceptionally heat and drought tolerant, forming a low carpet of color that thrives in the hottest summer conditions.
Growing Instructions:
- Sow seeds directly outdoors after all danger of frost, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost.
- Press seeds lightly into soil surface; they need light to germinate. Do not cover deeply.
- Keep soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7-14 days at 70-80°F.
Care:
- Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10-11; grown as an annual in zones 2-11.
- Light: Full sun. Minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water: Low. Allow soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering can cause rot.
- Soil: Well-draining, sandy or gritty soil. Tolerates poor soils.
- Maintenance: Deadheading not necessary but can encourage more blooms. Self-seeds readily.
Uses: Perfect for rock gardens, borders, ground cover, hanging baskets, and containers. The bright, cheerful blossoms open during the day and close at night, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
