Planting & Care

Sow hibiscus seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Nick or lightly scarify the seed coat and soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours to improve germination. Press seeds into a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix, barely covering them. Keep the tray warm (70–85°F) and consistently moist. Germination can be slow and uneven, often taking several weeks.

Once seedlings have several true leaves and all danger of frost has passed, harden them off gradually and transplant to a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. In cooler zones, grow in containers that can be moved indoors for winter.
