Planting & Care

Start hibiscus seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Nick or lightly scarify the seed coat and soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to help improve germination. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix. Keep the tray warm and consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can be slow and uneven, so be patient.

Once seedlings have several true leaves and all danger of frost has passed, harden them off gradually and transplant to a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells. Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. In colder zones, grow in containers that can be moved indoors for winter or treat as an annual.
