Soft Orange Coneflower is a warm-toned Echinacea variety prized for its gently recurved petals in shades of soft orange, peach, and apricot. These perennial flowers bring a relaxed, naturalistic feel to borders, cottage gardens, and meadow plantings, and their daisy-like form pairs well with ornamental grasses and other sun-loving perennials. Coneflowers are also a familiar sight in pollinator-friendly landscapes, where their raised cones and open petals are easy for many beneficial insects to visit.

Grown from seed, Soft Orange Coneflower offers an economical way to establish a long-lived perennial display. Plants typically form upright clumps of green foliage and bloom over a long summer-to-fall window once established. The flowers are suitable for garden beds, cutting gardens, and mixed perennial borders, and the seed heads can be left standing for winter interest.

Planting & Care

Sow coneflower seeds indoors in a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix, pressing the seeds lightly into the surface and covering them only thinly, as light can aid germination. Keep the medium evenly moist but not soggy and provide warmth and bright light. Germination can be uneven, so be patient and avoid discarding the tray too early. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves and danger of frost has passed, harden them off gradually before transplanting into a sunny garden spot with well-drained soil.

Water newly transplanted coneflowers regularly during their first season to help them establish. Once established, they are generally fairly drought tolerant, though they perform best with occasional deep watering during dry spells. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering, or leave some seed heads in place for winter interest and bird activity. In cold climates, a light layer of mulch around the plants in late fall can help protect the crowns over winter.
