Sombrero Coneflower is a compact Echinacea variety prized for its bold, brightly colored blooms and sturdy, well-branched habit. The Sombrero series is known for producing large, prominent cones surrounded by broad, overlapping petals, bringing vivid color and texture to sunny borders, pollinator gardens, and cut flower arrangements. These perennial flowers return year after year and are a favorite of bees and butterflies throughout the summer season.

With their manageable size and long bloom window, Sombrero Coneflowers work well near the front of a perennial bed, in container plantings, or massed along a garden path. Their daisy-like form and warm-toned flowers pair easily with ornamental grasses and other sun-loving perennials.

Planting & Care

Sow coneflower seeds indoors in a light, well-draining seed-starting mix, pressing the seeds gently into the surface and covering only lightly, as light aids germination. Keep the medium evenly moist but not soggy and provide warmth and bright light. Germination can be uneven, so allow several weeks and be patient with slow starters. Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed, harden them off gradually before transplanting outdoors.

Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil and water newly transplanted coneflowers regularly during their first season to help them establish. Once established, Echinacea is fairly drought tolerant. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering, or leave seed heads in place through fall and winter for birds and winter interest.
