Grow your own delicious, hearty rutabagas with these American Purple Top seeds. This classic heirloom variety produces large, smooth roots with purple tops and creamy yellow flesh, perfect for roasting, mashing, or storage.
General Info: Rutabaga is a cool-season root vegetable that thrives in temperatures between 50-65°F. Best planted in late summer for a fall harvest or early spring for summer harvest.
Growing Instructions: Sow seeds directly in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant 1/2 inch deep, spacing seeds 2 inches apart in rows 18-24 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 6-8 inches apart for full-sized roots. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
USDA Zone: Best suited for zones 3-9. Can tolerate light frost which often improves sweetness.
Light and Water: Full sun to partial shade. Water deeply once a week, increasing during dry spells. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
