A very unique annual from South Africa which sports a series of summer whorls of deep orange lipped flowers encircling the strong, square stems in a flattened hemisphere. After killed by the first hard frost the dried inflorescence remain on the stout stems. The stems and inflorescence can be used in dried arrangements and add interest in the winter garden. Flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Being found in its native habitat growing on roadsides and wastelands this is a tough annual which can be grown in virtually any conditions. A dramatic and unique plant for any garden.
Being in the mint family the leaves and flowers of this and others in this genus of the mint family, have been used for herbal purposes.
