Winter or spring annual typically needs 180 days to fruit—best sown in the fall. The red seeds are eaten by wildlife and is thus used in wildlife management. Valued for providing food for game birds and other birds.

A very useful plant in naturalistic gardens, and conservation plantings—can be used as a buffer strip. The candelabra arrangement of the flower/seed heads adds a striking architectural effect en masse, as a specimen, or sprinkled throughout the garden.
