This long-blooming winter annual begins its show in early spring when only 2” tall—the bright yellow flowers are a standout in the garden on a widely branched plant eventually becoming 36" tall by 30" wide. Being a winter annual the plant germinates in early fall and remains green through the winter blooming in very early spring—can be planted spring through fall for bloom the following year though only fall planting is needed. In the north start indoors and set out for the required cold.
Though this species typically needs to go through a winter to bloom we have had success starting seeds indoors in late winter and setting out transplants just after the last frost—the plant then blooms in late summer, instead of beginning its blooming season in early spring, and even sometimes flowering the following year as it does in nature. Plants which germinate in the fall and go through the winter bloom from mid-spring until late summer—most of the growing season.
