—Size: Size: 10' tall by 10' wide
—Site: full sun
—USDA Hardiness Zones: annual
—To Propagate: : Plant as one would climbing garden beans, though soaking seeds for 12 hours prior to planting will hasten germination.
A native annual vine which produces soft, glowing, yet enchanting apricot to purple flowers.
Native to much of the U.S. from north to south this annual vine produces flower clusters of 4-10 flowers though typically only 1-3 are blooming at one time, providing for a long bloom period. Flower color begins as a soft apricot changing to a lovely light purple. Since flowers are held on a long branch to attract pollinators they form a lovely mass over the leaves. The flower has a curving keep petal, unique to this genus. Leaves are almost never bothered by insects or disease and are lovely foliage on their own. The pods, once matured and dried, abruptly twist casting the seeds several feet. Most commonly grown, and seen, growing on supports or over foliage. Can also be used as a groundcover.
This native vine offers something different for those looking for an unusual addition to the garden. Though not nearly as showy as the long-cultivated sweet pea, its flowers are captivating.
A great native that provides much sought after nectar for native pollinators.
